ISB Interview Day: WAT Format, Timeline and What to Carry

4 min read

Your interview invite for ISB arrives about five or six days before the date. That is not much time to arrange leave, check your laptop and practise. Round 1 interviews are listed from the second week of October to the second week of December 2026, so applicants are getting invites now. Round 2 interviews run from the fourth week of December 2026 to the first week of February 2027, and Round 3 in February 2027, per ISB's application deadlines page.

Updated for the ISB PGP Class of 2028 admissions cycle, October 2026.

This post covers the logistics of the day: when the invite comes, what the written exercise looks like, how long the interview runs, and what to carry. For the content of the questions, see our guides on what is asked in ISB interviews and ISB WAT preparation. ISB does not publish the exact format of the day, so what follows is what applicants reported in the 2026 intake. ISB's FAQ page confirms only that interviews are held and that there is no group discussion.

The invite and the days before

Invites arrived 3 to 11 days before the interview, usually 5 to 6 days. The email gave the date, time and venue. ISB ran multiple weekends per city and virtual interviews, so you may be offered a choice or assigned one.

If your preferred city's interviews had finished, some applicants were called by the admissions team and offered a slot in Hyderabad or a virtual interview on a later weekend. Check your email and spam every day while you wait.

The interview day at a glance

Stage

What applicants reported

Arrival

Reaching about 30 minutes early worked well. One applicant did exactly that.

Written exercise

Two prompts in about 20 minutes in total, typed on your own laptop.

Personal interview

About 40 to 60 minutes with a panel. One in-person interview started on time and lasted an hour.

After

Status shows Interview Completed. Results come together at the end of the round.

The written exercise

The written exercise was done on the spot, about 15 minutes before the interview slot in one reported in-person case. You get two prompts and about 20 minutes in total, and you type on your own laptop. Bring one that works. Office laptops can have restrictions that get in the way.

The prompts last cycle were ethical dilemmas from team and workplace situations, not current affairs. Examples reported:

  • Your MBA internship manager gives you and your peers gifts after a successful project. What do you do? Evaluate the impact on peers and the employer.

  • A teammate is frequently late and takes many leaves, and others disapprove. What do you do?

  • You realise you made an error on a completed team project that the instructor might not catch. What do you do?

The exercise appears to test how you reason under time pressure, and possibly to cross-check your writing against your application essays. Most panels did not discuss it in the interview. Practise two prompts in 20 minutes, with a clear position, two or three trade-offs and a decision. Launchpad has a free WAT practice test in ISB's format with 144 topics and no sign-in needed: launchpad.careersimplified.co.in/wat.

The personal interview

Expect 40 to 60 minutes. Some panels were conversational rather than grilling. The themes applicants reported:

  • Tell me about yourself.

  • Walk through your career progression and why you made each move.

  • Your current role and day-to-day work.

  • Which parts of your job AI cannot replace.

  • Strengths and weaknesses.

  • Short and long-term goals, and why ISB.

  • Questions from your essays.

  • Why come back (for people working abroad).

  • Interests outside work.

Applicants who interviewed reported that the panel focused on career progression, goals, work experience and the essays, not on test scores. Consultants said interviewers have the application, essays and recommendation but not the scores. That is reported, not official. Re-read your ISB essays the night before, since questions often come straight from them. A mock panel helps more than another read of a question list, as we explain in why mock interviews matter.

Virtual or in person

Both were offered last cycle. The preparation is the same, but the logistics differ.

  • In person: plan travel with a buffer, carry your laptop and charger, and arrive early.

  • Virtual: test your connection, camera and audio, use a quiet room with a plain background, keep the laptop plugged in, and have a backup connection ready.

Applicants who chose virtual interviews sometimes saw their status flip from Shortlisting in Progress back to Verified for a day or two and still got invites, which looked like a portal glitch.

What to carry

  • Your own laptop and charger, tested.

  • Your invite email, saved offline.

  • A government ID.

  • A pen and notepad for notes.

Original documents were not reported as required at the interview. Check your invite email for anything ISB asks you to bring, and follow it exactly.

What happens after

Your status changes to Interview Completed and decisions come together at the end of the round. For Round 1, ISB lists end-December 2026. Last cycle, results arrived in sequence: admits first, then waitlists, then rejections. While you wait, talk to your manager about the notice period, because a two to three month notice period is hard to compress after the fact. Our guide to results and what happens after the admit covers that stage.
