ISB Waitlist Explained: Quartiles, How the List Moves and What You Can Do

4 min read

Waitlist emails land on the same day as admits and rejections, and they leave applicants with more questions than answers. ISB's current timeline lists Round 1 decisions for end-December 2026, Round 2 for mid-February 2027 and Round 3 for mid-March 2027, per ISB's application deadlines page. If you apply in one of those rounds and land on the waitlist, this guide is what we would want you to read first.

Updated for the ISB PGP Class of 2028 admissions cycle, October 2026.

Everything below about how the waitlist behaved comes from the 2026 intake and applicant reports. ISB does not publish how waitlist conversion works, so these are patterns, not rules. Please check isb.edu for this cycle's process.

What a waitlist email tells you

Applicants who were waitlisted last cycle were told their quartile, from Q1 to Q4. That is the main piece of information you get. The email does not give a rank, a number of seats or a date by which you will hear.

Treat the quartile as a rough signal, not a position in a queue. The next section explains why.

Quartiles and why conversions are not in order

Conversions did not strictly follow quartile order. Applicants believed ISB balances the class by profile, including gender, engineering versus non-engineering background and work experience. One reported example: a male non-engineer converted from Q4 while a male engineer in Q3 had not.

The sensible reading is that Q1 means better odds, not a guarantee, and Q3 or Q4 still means possible. If you are in a profile group that is common in the pool, you may wait longer. If your profile adds something the class needs, you may move sooner. You cannot see which side you are on, so do not plan your year around a quartile.

When the list moves

Reported patterns from the 2026 intake:

  • Round 1 waitlisters were converted alongside Round 2 results.

  • Some Round 1 converts declined because they had already paid deposits at other schools. That freed seats, and Round 2 waitlisters converted after the Round 2 fee deadline passed.

  • Movement continued into March.

  • One applicant described waiting nearly three months before converting.

Last cycle, Round 2 results came out around 20 February 2026 and Round 3 results around 13 March 2026. Classes began in mid-April, so late converts had little time to prepare. For this cycle, use the dates on ISB's page and expect movement to follow the same logic: each result date and each fee deadline can release seats.

Why seats open up

Seats open when admitted candidates decline or stop responding. The common reasons are a deposit paid elsewhere, a better scholarship, a notice period that cannot be negotiated, or a change in plans. That is also why waitlist movement tends to cluster after fee deadlines, not before.

For you, the practical consequence is that the weeks right after a fee deadline are the weeks to watch your email.

What you can do

Send a letter of intent

There is no harm in sending one. Last cycle's typical reply was a standard acknowledgement. Keep it short: say ISB is your first choice, reconfirm one or two reasons tied to your goals, and mention anything genuinely new since you applied. Do not send repeated follow ups.

Add a genuine profile update

A promotion, a new certification, a stronger test score or a measurable project result is worth sharing once. Padding it with minor updates hurts. If you are reworking your story for a later round, the interview themes in our ISB guide show what panels tend to probe.

Keep backups alive

Do not stop other applications because ISB put you on a list. A later round at ISB or an offer elsewhere keeps your year intact. Our note on spreading applications across rounds covers the timing.

Weigh the cost of holding versus paying elsewhere

If another school's deposit deadline arrives before your waitlist moves, you are choosing between a certain seat and an uncertain one. That is a financial and personal call. A deposit paid elsewhere is not a signal ISB sees, but it may be money you do not recover if you later convert at ISB.

No deferral for waitlist converts

Deferrals were reportedly granted only with a valid documented reason, such as medical, promotion or project reasons, and reportedly not allowed for waitlist converts. If you convert, plan to join in that intake. Talk to your manager early about your notice period, because late converts have the least time to negotiate release.

If you do not convert

Some waitlisted applicants never receive an offer. If that happens, a reapplication needs a real change in your profile, not just a better essay. Applying again with the same email ID matters, because a different email makes the reapplicant field default to No. Our guide to the reapplicant essay shows how to answer what has changed since last year. FAQ

What does the ISB waitlist quartile mean?

Applicants were told Q1 to Q4. Q1 suggests better odds, but conversions did not follow quartile order strictly.

Can I send a letter of intent to ISB after being waitlisted?

Applicants did, and the typical reply was a standard acknowledgement. There is no sign it hurts.

When does the ISB waitlist move?

Last cycle it moved with the next round's results, after fee deadlines, and into March.

Can a waitlist convert defer?

Reportedly not. Deferrals were granted only for documented reasons and not to waitlist converts.

What to do now

  1. Note your quartile and date. Do not compare with others.

  2. Send one letter of intent if you choose to, with a genuine update.

  3. Keep other applications going and track their deposit deadlines.

  4. Start the notice period conversation with your manager now.

  5. Mark the dates after each fee deadline and watch your inbox, including spam.

These patterns come from the 2026 intake and applicant reports. ISB can change its process, so confirm everything on isb.edu.
