If you're eyeing ISB or the IIMs this admissions cycle, the first thing you notice is that no two schools run the process the same way. ISB PGP wants essays with your application. IIM Ahmedabad PGPX makes you write essays only after you clear the initial shortlist, then adds an extempore and personal interview on interview day. IIM Bangalore EPGP wants a Statement of Purpose and two recommendation letters upfront, then tests you with a Written Ability Test at the interview stage. IIM Calcutta MBAEx wants an SOP and two LORs too, but skips the WAT and extempore entirely and goes straight to interview.

This post pulls all four processes into one place: what each program asks for, when, and how to prepare. We checked every date and process claim here against each school's own admissions pages before publishing, and a few things turned out different from what's floating around online. Where that happened, we've flagged it.

A note on naming before we start. All four schools count their "class" differently. ISB calls this cycle's intake the Class of 2028, because the program starts in April 2027 and graduates in 2028. IIM Ahmedabad calls its incoming cohort the PGPX Class of 2027-28. IIM Bangalore's official admissions pages label this intake EPGP 2027-28. IIM Calcutta calls it the 20th batch, for a programme running 2026-27. Different labels, same underlying admissions window, roughly August 2026 through February 2027.

Quick glance comparison

All four require a test-center GMAT or GRE score, and none accept the CAT. IIM Calcutta is the strictest, rejecting the GMAT Focus Edition's online delivery option entirely. Beyond that, here is how the four programs differ, side by side.

Treat this as a planning map, not gospel. Every one of these details can shift slightly year to year, so cross-check exact essay prompts, LOR counts, and interview logistics against the brochure the day each round opens.

The cycle at a glance: what's due when

This is every round across all four schools for the cycle currently underway, verified against each school's own admissions pages, portal screenshots, or dated news coverage from July and August 2026.

The single most useful takeaway from this calendar: if you want the maximum number of interview slots and, at ISB specifically, a materially better acceptance rate, apply in Round 1 everywhere. Every one of these four programs rewards early applicants with more available slots and more runway to recover from a setback anywhere else in the process.

ISB PGP: what to do, and when

ISB PGP is built for early to mid career professionals. The eligibility floor is 2 years of work experience, though the incoming class averages 4 to 5 years, which makes it the most GMAT and GRE score sensitive of the four programs covered here.

The process shape is straightforward relative to the other three. Your application form, transcripts, test score, essays, and at least one LOR all go in together at the round deadline. There is no separate essay-after-shortlist stage. An interview follows for shortlisted candidates.

We confirmed the essay prompts for this cycle directly against ISB's current admissions guidance, and they match what's been circulating: Essay 1, at 400 words, asks what unique experiences shaped you and what they taught you about leadership. Essay 2, also 400 words, asks what intellectual experiences shaped your approach to learning and led you to an MBA. The optional essay, at 250 words, invites you to share any intellectual pursuits or unconventional perspectives that shaped your worldview and could contribute to the class. Re-applicants get a 4th essay at 200 words on what's changed since their last application.

How to prepare. Lock your GMAT Focus Edition or GRE date now if you haven't. You want enough runway for a retake if the score disappoints, because ISB genuinely weighs it. Three to four weeks before your target round, draft essays around two or three real leadership and learning stories rather than a restated resume. Both mandatory essays ask why, not what, and self-awareness is the differentiator, not achievement density. Two to three weeks before submission, approach your recommender. Share your essays and career goals so their letter reinforces your narrative instead of reading generically. ISB wants someone who directly supervised you, not your most senior contact. After submission, if you're shortlisted, prepare a behavioral interview built on the STAR method: situation, task, action, result. ISB interviewers tend to go deep on 2 or 3 specific incidents rather than sweep across your whole career. Round 1, closing September 20, 2026, has historically carried the best acceptance odds and the widest interview city selection.

IIM Ahmedabad PGPX: what to do, and when

IIM-A PGPX targets more senior professionals: 4 or more years of experience and a minimum age of 25. It's widely regarded as the most academically demanding of the four one-year programs, and its process sequencing is the one that trips people up most.

You submit an application form and resume by the Round 1 deadline. Essays are requested only after you clear the initial shortlist, inside a tight window. IIM-A PGPX is the one program in this comparison with no letters of recommendation at any stage, not at application and not after shortlist. Some older guides, including an earlier version of this post, describe a post-shortlist reference requirement here. We checked this directly against the current brochure and admissions guidance and found no LOR or reference-letter step anywhere in the process. For 2027-28 batch admission, IIM-A also only allows candidates to apply once across the two rounds.

Here's where we want to correct something else specific. A commonly repeated claim is that shortlisted candidates get 10 to 15 days to write their essays. What we found checking directly against recent admissions guides is more precise and considerably less generous: the full runway from shortlist to interview does run roughly two weeks, but the actual essay writing task, once the specific prompt is released inside that window, typically has to be completed within 2 to 3 days. That's a meaningfully tighter task than "two weeks to write essays" implies, and it's the reason advance preparation matters more here than almost anywhere else in this comparison.

Essay themes based on recent cycles include a narrative essay on handling a volatile or high-pressure situation at work, running around 1000 words, a shorter essay of about 500 words on what makes you someone peers and faculty would want in the room, and a final open-ended essay of about 500 words for explaining any gaps or anomalies in your profile.

Interview day itself has two parts, back to back: an extempore, where you get a topic slip, roughly 30 to 60 seconds to gather your thoughts, and 1 to 2 minutes to speak, followed by a personal interview (PI) with a faculty panel covering your background, goals, and fit.

How to prepare. From now until the Round 1 deadline of September 2, 2026, focus entirely on the application form and resume. This is what gets you shortlisted, since essays come later and there are no letters of recommendation to chase at any stage. Make sure your work-ex narrative shows clear progression and increasing scope, because that's what a shortlist committee is scanning for with no essay to read yet. Once shortlisted, start outlining possible "handling volatility" stories before the shortlist even lands, so you're not building from zero inside a 2-to-3-day writing window. For the extempore, practice thinking out loud on current business and policy topics under a strict time limit; it comes immediately before the PI on the same day, so pace your energy for both. The content of your opinion matters far less than your structure, clarity, and composure under a cold-open prompt you didn't choose. Only one round per cycle is allowed here. You cannot apply in Round 1, get rejected, and try again in Round 2 the same year, so pick your round deliberately based on when your test score and profile peak.

IIM Bangalore EPGP: what to do, and when

IIM-B EPGP is the most senior-skewing of the four, typically drawing candidates with 5 or more years of experience, often at a genuine functional or industry pivot point.

The SOP and two mandatory online LORs go in with the application. There's no later essay stage. What sets EPGP apart is the Written Ability Test, administered alongside the interview: your composite score blends academics, test score, work-ex quality, WAT performance, and the interview together. IIM-B is explicit that only test-center GMAT or GRE scores are valid; an online, take-home GMAT or GRE score will not be accepted for this cycle.

How to prepare. From now until the Round 1 deadline of August 17, 2026, at 5pm IST, write your SOP around both your achievements and a clear statement of future goals. EPGP explicitly frames the SOP as covering both, and it deserves the same rigor as a full essay, not a formality you rush at the end. Line up recommenders early. IIM-B is explicit that one referee should ideally be your current employer or someone who can speak directly to your job performance, not a client or a professor from years back. If shortlisted, interviews run September 5 and 6, 2026 for Round 1, or December 12 and 13, 2026 for Round 2, across Bengaluru, Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, or online for overseas applicants. For the WAT itself, expect a timed, on-the-spot argument, typically 20 to 30 minutes to plan and write roughly 250 to 300 words on a current affairs, business, or ethics prompt. Practice writing a structured argument against the clock: a clear stance, 2 or 3 supporting points, and a crisp conclusion. This is a distinct skill from interview speaking and needs its own rehearsal, not just general reading. For the interview itself, expect a fairly traditional panel probing why a one-year MBA, and why now, at this specific career stage. If you're weighing multiple schools, note that Round 1 offers here (September 21, 2026) come with a tight acceptance window, October 1 to 10, so map this against ISB and IIM-A's timelines before you're forced into a premature decision.

IIM Calcutta MBAEx: what to do, and when

IIM-C MBAEx targets professionals with 5 or more years of experience and, notably, no upper age limit, which historically makes it one of the more age-diverse cohorts among the four.

The process is the most traditional of the group: application, SOP, and two mandatory LORs, all submitted together, no separate essay round, and, unlike IIM-A and IIM-B, no extempore or WAT component at all. Form, SOP, LORs, then straight to interview for shortlisted candidates.

The SOP prompt is explicit about three things it wants answered: why you want to join the programme, what qualities, experience, and achievements justify your admission, and what type of role or level you're targeting after the programme.

We want to flag two corrections here. First, some older FAQ material still circulating references a work-experience cutoff of March 31, 2026, which was the correct cutoff for last cycle's already-completed admissions round. For the cycle open right now, the 20th batch running 2026-27, the verified cutoff is 5 years of full-time, post-qualification experience as of March 31, 2027. Second, this cycle is IIM Calcutta's 20th MBAEx batch, not the 21st, as an earlier version of this post and several other guides state. We also found two figures worth having in your back pocket that older guides don't carry: the current programme fee sits at roughly ₹33.5 lakh for the full year, and the recent class GMAT average trends around 696.

On round dates specifically: IIM Calcutta confirmed in July 2026 that it had formally opened applications for this cycle, but as of this writing its official schedule page had not published locked Round 1, 2, and 3 dates the way IIM-A and IIM-B have. Treat any specific IIM-C date you see anywhere, including in the calendar above, as a working estimate based on the prior cycle's pattern, and confirm the true dates on iimcal.ac.in before you submit anything.

How to prepare. Structure your SOP directly around the three questions the programme explicitly asks, rather than writing a free-form essay. The committee is scoring against those three points specifically. For LORs, both recommendations can come from the same organization, but they must come from people who evaluated your actual job performance, not colleagues or clients. Brief them the way you would for any other school. On GMAT logistics, Calcutta requires scores routed through Pearson VUE using the programme's specific reporting code, and it is strict about this: online or at-home GMAT delivery is not accepted here at all, only the in-person, test-center GMAT Focus Edition. Confirm the current reporting code on the official page before your test, and get your official score reported ahead of your interview slot. Unofficial scores are fine to submit with the initial application. Since there's no WAT or extempore here, the interview alone carries more relative weight than at IIM-B. Be ready to walk through your SOP narrative in real depth, since interviewers will likely probe exactly what you wrote rather than asking generic questions.

Cross-cutting prep advice

GMAT Focus Edition or GRE. All four schools require test-center-based scores, and none accept the CAT. IIM Bangalore and IIM Calcutta are both explicit that online, take-home GMAT or GRE scores will not be accepted this cycle. If you're targeting Round 1 anywhere, aim to have your score finalized 3 to 4 weeks before that deadline, which leaves room for one retake without derailing the rest of your application.

Essays and SOPs, generally. Across all four programs, the strongest applications name a small number of specific, well-chosen stories and go deep on them rather than trying to summarize an entire career. Reviewers can tell the difference between an incident you're recounting from memory and one you've reverse-engineered to fit a prompt.

Recommenders. ISB, IIM-B, and IIM-C all want someone who directly observed your work, not your most senior contact. Approach recommenders 3 to 4 weeks before you'll need the letter, and always share your own essays or SOP with them so their letter reinforces your narrative instead of quietly contradicting it. IIM-A PGPX is the exception. It doesn't ask for a letter of recommendation at any stage, so you can skip this step entirely for that application.

Extempore and WAT, specifically for IIM-A and IIM-B. These are tests of composure and structure, not of holding the correct opinion on a controversial topic. A simple daily habit builds the muscle faster than reading opinion pieces: pick a random current-affairs headline, give yourself 60 seconds to structure a response, then either speak for 90 seconds (for the extempore) or write a 250-to-300-word argument against a clock (for the WAT).

Interviews, generally. All four ultimately probe the same underlying questions: why an MBA, why now, why this specific program, and whether your story holds together under real questioning. The STAR method works as prep scaffolding for any of the four, even the ones that don't formally require essays built that way.

Applying to more than one. Because deadlines cluster hard in the August-to-September stretch, sequence your test date, essays, and recommender outreach as early as possible. You do not want to be writing IIM-A's post-shortlist essays inside a 2-to-3-day window, IIM-B's SOP, and ISB's essays all in the same week.

What we corrected, and why it matters

A short, honest summary, since getting these details wrong costs real applicants real time. The IIM-A PGPX Round 1 deadline is September 2, 2026, not September 8, and this is confirmed directly against IIM-A's own eligibility criteria, which tie the Round 1 and Round 2 deadlines to specific GMAT/GRE validity cutoff dates. The IIM-A post-shortlist essay writing window is functionally 2 to 3 days once the prompt is released, not a comfortable 10 to 15 days, even though the broader shortlist-to-interview runway does run about two weeks. IIM-A PGPX does not require any letters of recommendation, at application or after shortlist, which an earlier version of this post got wrong; its interview day pairs an extempore with a personal interview, not a committee that also collects references. IIM Calcutta's current work-experience cutoff for this cycle is March 31, 2027, not March 31, 2026, and this is its 20th MBAEx batch, not its 21st, correcting an error in an earlier version of this post. IIM Calcutta has not, as of this writing, published locked Round 1, 2, and 3 dates for the current cycle the way IIM-A and IIM-B have, so any specific IIM-C date in the calendar above should be treated as a pattern-based estimate pending official confirmation.

None of this changes the overall shape of the four processes. It changes specific numbers, and in one case a whole application step, that determine whether you submit on time and prepare for the right things.

Frequently asked questions

Which of the four should I apply to first? There's no universal answer, but sequencing by deadline usually works: IIM-B EPGP closes earliest (August 17), followed by IIM-A PGPX (September 2) and ISB PGP Round 1 (September 20). If your profile fits more than one, prepare the earliest deadline's materials first regardless of which school you'd rank highest, since a late submission anywhere is a wasted cycle.

Can I apply to more than one of these in the same admissions cycle? Yes, and many candidates do. The constraint isn't eligibility, it's bandwidth. Overlapping deadlines mean you'll often be drafting IIM-A's post-shortlist essays, IIM-B's SOP, and ISB's essays within the same few weeks, so start your recommender outreach and test prep well ahead of the earliest deadline you're targeting.

Does a lower GMAT score rule me out anywhere? None of the four publish an official cutoff, and all four say they evaluate holistically. In practice, ISB is the most score-sensitive of the group given its younger average work experience, while IIM-C, IIM-A, and IIM-B weigh work experience depth and leadership trajectory more heavily as the candidate pool skews more senior.

What happens if I miss a Round 1 deadline? At ISB, IIM-A, and IIM-B, later rounds exist specifically for this. You lose some of the acceptance-rate and interview-slot advantage that comes with Round 1, but you're not shut out for the cycle unless you miss the final round.

Is the GMAT Focus Edition accepted everywhere? Yes for ISB, IIM-A, and IIM-B, as long as it's the test-center version. IIM Calcutta accepts the Focus Edition too, but only its in-person, test-center delivery, not the online option.
