IIM Ahmedabad PGPX Round 2 (2027-28): Timeline, Deadline Prep and What to Do After You Apply

Oct 15
6 min read

Round 2 is where many of the strongest PGPX applications land, because it gives you time to fix a test score, tighten your story and stop applying in a hurry. For the 2027-28 batch, the reported Round 2 deadline is 23 November 2026, which leaves roughly five weeks from today. This guide lays out the calendar, a week-by-week plan for the weeks before you submit, and an equally important plan for the weeks after, because the PGPX process does not end when you click submit.

One caution first. IIMA's own application page has carried outdated dates in past cycles, so the dates below come from secondary sources tracking the 2027-28 cycle. Treat every date as expected, and confirm it on the official PGPX portal before you plan around it.

The Round 2 calendar at a glance

The sequence below is the one reported for the 2027-28 cycle. What matters is its shape: a long application window, then a very short essay window that arrives almost without warning, then interviews, then results.

Offers and results

The number to notice is the essay window. Shortlisted candidates reportedly get only 48 to 72 hours between the shortlist and the essay and resume submission. Candidates who treat essays as something to start after the shortlist tend to write them badly. The rest of this guide is built around that fact. For fees, eligibility and the full process, see our IIM Ahmedabad PGPX complete application guide.

Is Round 2 the right round for you?

Round 2 is a good fit if your GMAT Focus Edition or GRE score is not where you want it, if your work story needs another month to sit properly, or if you were not ready for the earlier deadline. It is a poor fit if you are using it as an excuse to delay a decision you could make today. We covered the trade-offs between rounds in why spreading your applications across rounds matters, and the short version is that PGPX does not reward early submission as such. It rewards a complete, sharp application.

Check the basics before you spend a week on anything else. As reported for this cycle, PGPX expects a bachelor's degree with 15 years of formal education, a minimum age of 25, at least four years of full-time post-graduation work experience (to be met by 31 March 2027), and a valid test-centre-based GMAT Focus Edition or GRE score from the last five years. If any of those is borderline, resolve it in week one, not in week five.

On scores, the reported median GMAT Focus Edition score for the current batch is around 652, but a median is not a cutoff. Our breakdown of what each programme actually expects on GMAT Focus Edition shows how to read it against your own profile. If you want a free, no-signup read on where you sit before committing to this round, Launchpad's Admit Chance Calculator covers IIMA and the other major programmes.

Before the deadline: a five-week plan

Working back from 23 November, here is a plan that front-loads the things you cannot rush. Adjust it to your own calendar, but do not drop the order.

Weeks 1 and 2: Lock the score and the facts

If you are retaking the test, book the slot now. Official score delivery takes time, and a score that arrives after the deadline helps no one. If your score is final, spend these two weeks on the facts instead: exact designations, dates of joining, team sizes, budgets handled, promotions. Every number you will later quote in an essay or an interview should be fixed in a single document now, because inconsistencies between the form, the essays and your interview answers are the easiest thing for a panel to notice.

Week 3: Build the story bank

PGPX is a programme for people with real work history, so the application is judged on what you did with it. Write down six to eight episodes from your career: a decision you owned, a team you led through something hard, a failure you learned from, a moment you changed your mind, a result you can put a number on. You are not writing essays yet. You are making the raw material that the 48-hour essay window will draw from. Our guide to the reapplicant essay framework is useful even for first-time applicants, because it forces the same discipline of showing change rather than describing it.

Week 4: Complete the application form

Fill in the form fully, then leave it for a day and read it as a stranger would. Does the career progression make sense? Are the gaps explained? A clean, consistent form is what gets you the shortlist; the essays and interview only matter if you get that far. Launchpad's free MBA Journey Playbook has a checklist you can adapt for this stage.

Week 5: Submit early, not on the last night

Submit at least two or three days before 23 November. Portals slow down near deadlines, payment gateways fail, and a document upload that works at noon may not work at 11 pm on the last day. Take a screenshot of every confirmation.

The gap after you submit (24 November to 3 December)

This is the most wasted window in the whole process. Your application is in, nothing is asked of you, and the shortlist is a week or so away. Use it as if the shortlist has already arrived, because if it does, you will have 48 to 72 hours to write essays and a resume and no time to think.

Do three things in this gap. First, turn your story bank into rough drafts of two or three essay-length answers, so the essay window becomes an editing exercise rather than a blank page. Second, update your resume to match the form exactly. Third, start extempore practice. IIMA's process includes a speaking component, and candidates who have never spoken on an unfamiliar topic for two minutes under time pressure are visibly uncomfortable. Our PGPX extempore topics and frameworks and the IIMA PGPX extempore topic list give you a bank to practise from.

Shortlist, essay window and interview

4 December: the shortlist

If you are shortlisted, the essay clock starts immediately. Shortlisting is reportedly based on test scores and the quality of the application, so there is nothing more you can do to influence it at this point. Your job is to be ready for the next step.

4 to 6 December: essays and resume

You will have roughly two to three days. Do not write all the essays in one sitting. Draft on day one, leave it overnight, and edit on day two; the difference in quality is large. Keep your answers anchored to the episodes in your story bank, and read our 11 MBA sample essays with prompts to calibrate tone and structure, without copying anyone's approach.

December to January: the interview

The interview is a face-to-face conversation with a faculty panel. Expect questions on your career progression, your decisions and your reasons for wanting an MBA now. Everything in your application is fair game, which is why the consistency work in week one matters. For preparation, start with what to do in the weeks between the shortlist and interview day and then work through Cracking the IIM Ahmedabad PGPX interview.

22 January: final selection

Final selection is reported to combine test results, the interview, the essays and professional diversity. It is a holistic decision, so a strong interview can offset a modest score and the reverse is also true. For context on how selective the programme is, our analysis of IIMA's RTI data on acceptance rates is worth reading before you form expectations.

If you miss the shortlist

Not being shortlisted is not a verdict on your career. It usually means the test score, the profile fit or the application's clarity fell short in a competitive pool. If it happens, work out which of the three it was before deciding what to do next. If you applied in Round 2 and did not make it, the realistic options are a stronger application next cycle or a different programme. Our Round 1 deadline guide shows how the earlier round works, which helps you plan a different timeline next time.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Round 2 deadline really 23 November 2026?

That is the date reported by secondary sources for the 2027-28 batch. IIMA's own page has been outdated before, so confirm it on the official PGPX portal.

Can I submit my test score after the deadline?

Do not plan on it. A valid score is part of the application, so have it final and delivered before you submit.

How much time will I have to write the essays?

Reportedly 48 to 72 hours after the shortlist is announced. Prepare your material before you know whether you are shortlisted.

Does applying in Round 2 reduce my chances?

There is no published evidence that Round 2 is disadvantaged as such. A complete application submitted on time is what counts.

When will I know the final result?

The reported date for final selection is 22 January 2027. Fee payment and joining timelines come with the offer, so read the offer documents carefully.
