ISB Salary Discrepancy Email: How to Report Your Salary and Respond
If you have applied to the ISB PGP for the Class of 2028, you have entered a salary figure, and ISB is going to check it. Round 1 closed on 20 September 2026 and interviews are listed from the second week of October, so most Round 1 applicants are inside verification right now. Round 2 closes on 6 December 2026 and Round 3 on 17 January 2027, according to ISB's application deadlines page, which means Round 2 and Round 3 applicants still have time to get the salary entry right before they submit.
Updated for the ISB PGP Class of 2028 admissions cycle, October 2026.
What follows is based on what applicants reported in the 2026 intake and on applicants we worked with. ISB does not publish a salary-entry rulebook that we could find, so treat this as observed patterns. If the portal instructions for this cycle say something different, the portal wins.
Why ISB verifies your salary
Applicants were told the check exists because, in earlier years, some stated salaries did not match proofs. That caused trouble later, when recruiters asked for past salary during placements. So ISB now compares what you entered against what you upload.
The check is about consistency, not about how high your salary is. A high salary is not a red flag on its own. A figure that does not match your documents is.
Fixed pay versus variable pay
Most discrepancy emails last cycle came from two mistakes. Applicants included variable pay in the figure, or they entered CTC when ISB was calculating monthly gross multiplied by 12 from the payslips.
The safe approach reported by applicants was to enter your fixed gross annual salary, before tax and PF deductions, and attach everything variable separately with a short note. Here is how common components were treated.
What to include and what to leave out
Component | Include in the salary figure? | What to do with it |
Basic pay and HRA | Yes | Part of fixed gross. Appears on every payslip. |
Other fixed allowances | Yes, if paid every month | Check that it shows on your payslips. |
Annual bonus | No | Upload the bonus letter or payslip as a separate document with a one line note. |
Shift or time zone allowance | No | Applicants who included these were queried. Attach proof separately. |
Target incentive or commission | No | Explain it in a note and attach the plan letter. |
RSUs and ESOPs | No | Mention in a note if relevant. Do not add to the figure. |
Joining bonus | No | Attach the offer letter clause separately. |
If you are unsure about a component, ask whether it appears as a fixed monthly line on your payslip. If it does, it is usually part of fixed gross. If it is paid yearly or depends on performance, keep it out and attach it separately.
How a mismatch actually happens
Here is an illustrative example with made-up numbers. Your CTC letter says Rs. 24 lakh a year. That includes Rs. 3 lakh target bonus and Rs. 1.2 lakh in a time zone allowance. Your payslips show monthly gross of Rs. 1.7 lakh. ISB multiplies that by 12 and gets Rs. 20.4 lakh. You entered Rs. 24 lakh, so the two figures are Rs. 3.6 lakh apart and you receive a discrepancy email.
Nothing dishonest happened. You simply entered a different definition of salary from the one ISB used. Entering Rs. 20.4 lakh and attaching the CTC letter plus a note on the bonus and allowance would have avoided the email.
What to upload
Your CTC or compensation letter.
Your most recent payslips.
Bonus, incentive or allowance documents, uploaded separately.
Increment or promotion letters if your pay changed recently.
Keep file names clear. A reviewer who understands your documents in one pass raises fewer queries.
If you get the discrepancy email
Work through this the same day.
Read the email fully. It says which figure ISB calculated and what it wants.
Respond inside the 72 hour window that applicants were given.
Upload where ISB reopened the section. Files sent to the general queries section were reportedly not considered.
Add a short explanation note that reconciles your figure to the documents, as in the example above.
If asked for a self-declaration, send a signed statement on company letterhead. A generic version is below.
I, [full name], employee ID [ID], declare that my income for the past [X] months was Rs. [Y] per month (fixed gross, before tax and PF deductions). The attached payslips and compensation letter support this statement. Signed: [name, designation, date]. Company letterhead and stamp.
Small mismatches are usually tolerated if you can explain them. Deeper background verification also happens after admission, so the numbers must be defensible later too.
Special cases
Recent promotion or job change. Upload both the old and new compensation letters and say which figure you entered and why.
Startup with irregular pay or a closed company. Applicants without proper payslips were asked for relieving or resignation letters to establish employment dates. Gather these early.
Self-employed or family business. ISB did not publish a format that we could find. Raise a portal query to ask what proof it accepts, and keep your tax returns and bank statements ready.
Working abroad. Enter the figure the form asks for and keep a note showing your conversion basis. If the form instructions say something specific, follow them.
Need-based scholarship applicants. You also upload income proof, sometimes including parents' ITRs and bank statements. Treat that as a separate document set from your salary proof.
Does a salary query hurt your chances?
We saw no evidence that it does. A salary query delays verification by a few days, sometimes about a week. Applicants who had one were still shortlisted and admitted. The application timeline in our ISB PGP application guide shows where verification sits in the process.
A high salary and the "why MBA" argument
If you earn more than the average ISB placement salary, panels may ask why you need an MBA at all. That is a goals question, not a salary question. You need a clear reason that does not depend on pay, such as a function switch, a leadership gap or a sector change. Build that argument in your ISB essays and rehearse it for the panel using the themes in what is asked in ISB interviews. If you want a second read on whether your numbers and your story line up, Launchpad's AI profile evaluation and essay review can give you one before you submit.
FAQ
Should I enter CTC or gross salary for ISB?
Applicants who entered fixed gross annual salary (monthly gross multiplied by 12, before tax and PF) matched ISB's calculation. Those who entered CTC with variable pay were queried.
Do I include my bonus in the ISB application salary?
Applicants reported leaving it out of the figure and attaching proof separately with a note.
How long do I have to respond to ISB's salary email?
Applicants were given about 72 hours. Respond the same day if you can.
Will a salary discrepancy email reduce my chances?
We saw no evidence of that. It delayed verification by a few days for those affected.
What to do now
Compute your fixed gross. Take the latest payslip gross and multiply by 12.
Compare it to your entry. If they differ, fix the entry before ISB does.
Prepare the bundle. CTC letter, payslips, bonus and allowance proofs, increment letters.
Draft your self-declaration from the template now, so a 72 hour deadline is not stressful.
Fix your goals story. Write the "why MBA" answer that holds even if your pay is high.
These patterns come from the 2026 intake and applicant reports. ISB can change its process, so confirm requirements on isb.edu.
