ISB PGP Application Guide 2027-28: Dates, Fees, Interview and WAT

Updated: Aug 24

ISB's Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP) is India's best-known one-year MBA: ranked #1 in India and #12 globally on the Financial Times Global MBA Ranking 2026, #5 globally on LinkedIn's Top MBA 2025 list, and home to roughly 820 students a year split across the Hyderabad and Mohali campuses. If you're applying to the Class of 2028, the process runs on a staggered, three-round system, and the details that actually decide whether you get an interview call are rarely the ones getting repeated on forums. This is a practical walk-through of the real dates, the real money involved, and what the Written Ability Test and interview genuinely look like, drawn from ISB's own published admissions material.

Application Deadlines for the Class of 2028

ISB's admission cycle for entry in 2027 runs across three rounds. Miss a deadline and your application isn't rejected, it's automatically rolled forward to the next round, but that convenience comes at a cost worth understanding before you rely on it.

Applying after September 20, 2026 rolls you automatically into Round 2 consideration, and applying after December 6, 2026 rolls you into Round 3. That rolling mechanism is genuinely generous, but it is not free: Round 1 draws against the largest and least-committed pool of seats, while Round 3 is largely the school filling specific gaps left in an otherwise near-complete class, not building one from scratch. If your GMAT/GRE and recommendations are ready, there is rarely a good reason to wait past Round 1 or Round 2.

Eligibility: What ISB Actually Requires

The formal bar is lower than most applicants assume. ISB requires a bachelor's degree in any discipline and a minimum of two years of full-time work experience at the time of application; part-time experience isn't counted, and family-business experience is evaluated only when backed by professional references. The GMAT or GRE is mandatory, and only the test-centre based versions are accepted, ISB stopped accepting the online/home editions from the April 2025 intake onward. Scores are valid for five years, and the Integrated Reasoning section is not considered in evaluation.

There is no published minimum cutoff. The current class's GMAT scores range from 530 to 780, and GRE scores range from 319 to 330. That 530-780 spread means a mid-500s GMAT with a genuinely strong file is not automatically disqualifying, but it does mean your essays and interview are carrying more of the decision than they would for a similarly-scored applicant at a school that screens harder on the number.

What ISB PGP Actually Costs: Application Fee vs. Programme Fee

These are two entirely different numbers, and conflating them is a common and expensive mistake. The application fee is what you pay to submit your candidacy. The programme fee is what you pay, months later, only if you're admitted and choose to enrol.

These figures are from the most recently published ISB fee circular; ISB revises application fees most cycles, so confirm the live number on the official application portal before you pay. Re-applicants, candidates who applied and were not admitted in a prior cycle and are applying again, pay a flat, lower fee across all three rounds.

The programme fee is the number that actually matters for your decision. For the current cycle, ISB publishes a total cost of ₹34,48,000 plus GST for shared accommodation on a single-instalment payment plan, on top of a refundable security deposit of ₹20,000. ISB describes this as covering "admission, commitment, and tuition fees" together, and notes the figure is indicative and subject to change.

Roughly 25 percent of each incoming class receives some form of financial assistance. That comes through ISB-sponsored merit waivers (25-100% of tuition), need-cum-merit assistance for lower-income families, donor-funded scholarships, some of which cover full tuition plus accommodation, and dedicated support for armed forces personnel and social-sector professionals. Multiple lenders also offer education loans up to ₹50 lakh, with interest rates in the 6.75-8.75% range and repayment tenures up to 15 years. Run the total programme fee, not the application fee, through your own payback math before you decide whether this year's round is realistic for you: the ₹5,000-7,500 you pay to apply is a rounding error against the roughly ₹35 lakh you're committing to if admitted.

The Application Form and Essays

Beyond the forms and transcripts, the essays are where ISB actually differentiates candidates with similar work experience and test scores. We've written a full breakdown of what the admissions committee is reading for, essay by essay, in ISB PGP Essays 2027: What the Admissions Committee Is Actually Reading For. The Written Ability Test: What Actually Happens on the Day

The WAT runs for a 20-minute window split across two short prompts, roughly 10 minutes per answer. You see the two prompts sequentially, not together, so there's no strategy of scanning both and picking the easier one first. There's no official word limit, but 200 to 250 words per response is a reasonable working target given the time available. The test typically happens at the interview venue, about 45 minutes ahead of your interview slot, and the panel convenes shortly after, often having already read what you wrote.

The WAT is not a separate hurdle sitting apart from the interview, it is effectively the first ten minutes of it, on paper, and panels do read your responses before they start asking questions. Format details can shift slightly between rounds and venues, so confirm the exact mechanics when you report on the day. For full prompts, sample responses, and a structured approach to the 20-minute window, see ISB Written Ability Test (WAT): Comprehensive Preparation Guide.

The Interview: Who's Actually on the Other Side of the Table

ISB interviews every shortlisted candidate, there's no group discussion round to filter the pool further before that. Interviews are conducted by ISB alumni rather than current faculty or admissions staff, and the school does not publish a fixed percentage for interview calls or final offers at any stage. Overseas candidates are interviewed remotely by phone or video call rather than being required to travel.

Treat the interview as a structured evaluation of clarity, maturity, and decision-making, not a stress test of facts or a rapid-fire quiz. Expect questions across your personal narrative, the specifics of your work experience, your post-MBA goals, examples of leadership and judgment, your self-awareness around failure and feedback, and your grasp of your own industry. We've mapped the eight question categories ISB alumni panels actually draw from, with example questions for each, in What Is Asked in ISB Interviews?

A Realistic Timeline If You're Targeting Round 1 or Round 2

Work backward from your target deadline rather than forward from today. A GMAT or GRE score takes real preparation time and the test-centre requirement means you can't sit it the week before a deadline; give yourself at minimum six to eight weeks of focused prep if you haven't already got a score you're happy with. Essays genuinely need two to three drafting cycles with outside feedback, not one strong weekend, and your recommenders need at least two to three weeks of lead time to write something specific rather than generic. Back-loading everything into the final ten days before a deadline is the single most common, and most avoidable, mistake we see, and it shows up in essays that read as rushed even when the underlying story is strong.

If your test score, work experience, and recommender relationships are already in reasonable shape, Round 1 or Round 2 gives you the fuller seat pool and, practically, more runway to fix a weak first draft before the deadline actually arrives. If you're spreading applications across ISB and other one-year programmes and want to think about round strategy more broadly, MBA Application Strategy: Why Spreading Your Applications Across Rounds Is Crucial is worth reading before you commit to a single deadline.
