ISB Scholarships: Merit vs Need-Based, How to Apply and What to Expect

4 min read

Scholarship money at ISB is real, but the process is easy to get wrong. Applicants in the 2026 intake struggled to find the scholarship section in the portal, some saw its window close before the round deadline, and several admits with very high test scores still received "Scholarship: 0" in their offer email. If you are applying for the Class of 2028, this is what you need to know and what to do early.

Updated for the ISB PGP Class of 2028 admissions cycle, October 2026.

The scholarship names, tiers and amounts below come from ISB's PGP fees and scholarships page, which lists figures for the 2027-28 academic year. ISB describes them as indicative and subject to change. The process patterns come from what applicants reported last cycle. Round 1 closed on 20 September 2026, Round 2 closes on 6 December 2026 and Round 3 on 17 January 2027, per ISB's application deadlines page.

What the programme costs and who gets help

ISB lists the PGP programme fee for 2027-28 as INR 34,48,000 plus GST with shared accommodation and single-instalment payment, plus a refundable security deposit of INR 20,000. ISB says about 25 percent of PGP students receive financial support each year, and full tuition aid is available for those with significant financial need.

ISB groups its support into three kinds. They work differently, so it helps to know which one you are aiming for.

Merit scholarships

Merit scholarships are considered automatically as part of your admission. You do not apply separately.

  • ISB Merit Waiver: covers 25 percent to 100 percent of tuition. ISB considers admitted candidates automatically.

  • Prof. Manasa Mandava Memorial Scholarship: 50 percent for women applicants, disbursed in two tranches.

Not applying for a scholarship does not affect your admission chances. The merit waiver is decided on your profile, not on an application you submit.

Need-based scholarships

Need-based awards require a separate scholarship section with an essay and income documentation. ISB's fees page lists these tiers.

  • Family income up to INR 8 lakh: 100 percent tuition coverage.

  • Family income between INR 8 lakh and INR 20 lakh: 75 percent coverage.

ISB's FAQ page, which looks older, gives a different income ceiling and describes income as covering yourself, your parents and your spouse if applicable. Where two ISB pages disagree, follow the portal instructions and the fees page, and ask ISB through the portal if you are unsure. Last cycle, need-based applicants uploaded income proof and sometimes parents' ITRs and bank statements.

Donor-supported and international scholarships

ISB lists several named awards funded by donors. These are examples from the current page.

  • Taparia Family Scholarship: a 100 percent tuition waiver, listed as INR 25.62 lakh, five awards a year.

  • Vidula Jalan Scholarship: covers tuition, admission, commitment and accommodation fees.

  • Bajaj Auto Scholarship: INR 10 lakh, three awards.

  • ISB Destination India: 100 percent of tuition, 25 scholarships for non-Indian nationals.

  • Bridge to India: 25 percent, five scholarships for Indian passport holders living abroad.

Check eligibility on ISB's page. The number of awards and the amounts can change from year to year.

Where the scholarship section sits and why to open it early

Applicants last cycle struggled to find the scholarship section and its essay prompt in the portal. The scholarship window could also close before the round deadline. Open that section on the day you start your application, not on the last day.

Read the essay prompt, check which documents it needs, and ask your family for income documents in the first week. Scholarship essays need a specific, factual account of your situation and plans. Our ISB essay guide covers the main application essays, and Launchpad's AI essay review can give a first read of a draft before you submit.

Interviews and how decisions arrive

ISB held scholarship interviews for some candidates before results. If you get an invite, treat it as a separate conversation about need, plans and why ISB. Bring the same documents you uploaded.

Scholarship decisions arrive with the admit email. There is no separate announcement.

"Scholarship: 0" in the admit email

Several admits saw "Scholarship: 0" in their email. Some had GMAT scores of 725 or above. Scholarships are not purely score-driven. A zero can mean you were not selected for an award, you did not apply for a need-based one, or the available awards went to others.

It does not mean your admission is at risk. It does mean you should plan financing, including the education loan options ISB lists, before you accept. Our post on what happens after the admit covers loans, notice period and the checklist.

Realistic expectations

ISB says about a quarter of students receive support each year. That makes it worth applying properly, but it is not something to budget around until you have it in writing. Plan your finances as if you will pay the full fee, and treat any award as a reduction.

If you are applying for a need-based scholarship, be accurate. ISB checks income documents, and inconsistent figures slow things down, just as salary mismatches do during verification. Our ISB PGP application guide shows where each step sits.
