XLRI PGDM-GM (Formerly GMP): The Only One-Year MBA That Takes XAT, GMAT or GRE

Updated: Aug 24

Every rotation of one-year MBA content out of India covers ISB PGP, IIM Ahmedabad PGPX, and IIM Bangalore EPGP so often that XLRI's own one-year executive program barely gets a mention. That is a mistake for a specific kind of candidate. XLRI's PGDM-GM, most people still call it by its older name, GMP, is the only major program in this category that accepts XAT alongside GMAT and GRE. If you already have an XAT score sitting from an earlier application cycle, or you are three years into a managerial role and not yet at the four- or five-year mark that locks you out of IIM-A PGPX and IIM-B EPGP, this program deserves a proper look before you rule it out. This piece covers what the test flexibility and eligibility bar actually mean, how the program stacks up against the three names everyone else covers, and the specific dates on the calendar for the cycle that is open right now.

The Only Program With Three Doors In

XLRI's PGDM-GM accepts three entirely different standardized tests for the same seat: GMAT, GRE, or XAT 2027. No other major one-year program in this space takes XAT. That sounds like a small technical detail until you consider who it actually helps. A candidate who sat for XAT two or three years ago while weighing XLRI's flagship two-year programs, or while keeping options open across the wider XAT-accepting ecosystem, can walk into the PGDM-GM application with a usable score already in hand. No new $275 GMAT booking, no fresh GRE slot, no three-month prep detour.

For the 2026-27 cycle, GMAT and GRE scores are valid if taken between January 1, 2023 and December 31, 2026. XAT 2027 itself is scheduled for January 3, 2027, with registration running from mid-July through December 6, 2026. XLRI has not published a minimum score threshold on its own admissions page for any of the three tests, though third-party aggregators commonly cite a GMAT benchmark around 650. Treat that figure with caution: 650 is a classic-scale reference from before the GMAT Focus Edition's February 2024 retirement of the old 200-800 scale, and it is not directly comparable to a Focus Edition score on the current 205-805 scale. Confirm any score benchmark against XLRI's own published cutoffs, not a recycled classic-scale number.

Where the Three-Year Floor Actually Sits

XLRI's PGDM-GM requires a minimum of three years of managerial or supervisory experience, measured as of March 31, 2027. That is not the lowest bar in the field on paper. ISB PGP's stated minimum is 24 months of full-time work experience, technically lower. But ISB's admissions committee weighs leadership scope and profile strength heavily regardless of the stated floor, so a candidate at exactly two years with a thin leadership footprint is not a strong bet there in practice. XLRI's three-year minimum sits in a genuinely useful middle position: high enough to signal real managerial responsibility, low enough to include candidates who are structurally excluded from IIM Ahmedabad PGPX (four years) and IIM Bangalore EPGP (five years, preferably under twelve).

This matters most for someone at the three-to-four-year mark who already has people-management or project-ownership responsibility but hasn't yet crossed into the window the two IIM programs require. Waiting a year to qualify for PGPX or EPGP is a legitimate strategy for some candidates. For others, particularly those whose current role has already plateaued or who see a specific window closing at their employer, applying now to a program that will actually consider their profile is the more defensible call.

What Eighteen Months Actually Buys You

Here is the detail most comparison lists miss entirely: despite being grouped with "one-year MBA" programs, XLRI's PGDM-GM runs 18 months full-time and residential, not 12. ISB PGP, IIM-A PGPX, and IIM-B EPGP all run roughly a year. XLRI does not.

That extra six months is not filler. The program uses it for a wider elective bank (XLRI markets more than 50 electives for customization), a leadership training component, and a rural exposure module that the 12-month programs do not attempt to replicate at the same depth. But six extra months away from a paycheck is a real cost, not a footnote, and it changes the total sabbatical math well beyond the ₹23.15 lakh program fee. If you are comparing total cost of attendance across programs, run the comparison on total months of foregone income plus fees, not fee alone. A candidate choosing between a ₹23.15 lakh, 18-month program and a similarly priced 12-month program at another school is not actually choosing between two equal costs.

What You Get on the Other Side

Placement numbers reported for XLRI's PGDM-GM cohort put the average salary around ₹28-29 lakhs per annum, the median close behind at roughly ₹26-27.5 lakhs, and a reported highest offer of ₹75 lakhs, with the batch placed in full. Those figures move year to year and by source, so treat them as a directional band rather than a guarantee, and ask the admissions office for the most recent placement report rather than relying on a blog post, including this one, for a number you plan to bank on.

The number that matters more than the average is the median, because it tells you what a typical candidate actually gets, not what the single best offer pulls the average toward. A median in the high twenty-lakh range for a candidate coming in at three to four years of experience is a meaningful jump for most managerial profiles at that stage, and it is worth benchmarking against your own current trajectory rather than against IIM-A or IIM-B's numbers, since those cohorts enter with more years of experience already priced into their pre-MBA compensation.

Consider two hypothetical applicants. The first has three and a half years at a mid-size manufacturing firm, an XAT score from an application two cycles ago, and no fresh GMAT or GRE attempt planned. The second has five years at a consulting firm and a GMAT Focus Edition score comfortably above most public benchmarks. The second candidate has a genuine choice between XLRI, IIM Ahmedabad, and IIM Bangalore, and should run the full comparison, including the twelve-versus-eighteen-month cost math, before committing. The first candidate does not have that choice at the two IIM programs today. For that candidate, the real decision is not "XLRI versus PGPX," it is "apply to XLRI's PGDM-GM now, or wait a year and reapply to a broader set including PGPX and EPGP." Both are reasonable, and the right call depends on how replaceable the next twelve months are at their current employer.

How the Four Programs Actually Compare

The pattern worth sitting with: XLRI is the only one of the four willing to take a non-GMAT, non-GRE score, and the only one that measures its floor at three years rather than four or five. Everything else, including duration and fee structure, is the trade-off you take on for that flexibility.

Who This Program Actually Fits

The strongest case for XLRI's PGDM-GM is a candidate with three to four years of genuine managerial experience, a usable XAT score already in hand, and enough runway at their employer or in their finances to absorb an 18-month program rather than 12. It also fits candidates who specifically want the rural exposure and field-based components XLRI has built its one-year brand around, rather than a pure classroom-and-placement track. A three-year manager who has already sat XAT and does not want to add a fresh GMAT or GRE attempt to their calendar has, in XLRI's PGDM-GM, one of the very few one-year programs where that score is not wasted.

It fits less well for a candidate who already clears the four- or five-year bar at IIM Ahmedabad or IIM Bangalore and is optimizing hard for the shortest possible career break. Twelve months away from a salary is a materially different decision than eighteen. It is worth running both scenarios with real numbers, not gut feel, before ruling either path in or out.

Deadlines on the Calendar Right Now

For the current cycle: XAT 2027 registration is open through December 6, 2026, with the exam itself on January 3, 2027. Candidates applying through GMAT or GRE instead face a December 31, 2026 application deadline. Work experience eligibility is measured as of March 31, 2027, and the program is expected to begin in mid-April 2027. XLRI's own admissions page had not published a detailed interview-round schedule for this specific cycle at the time of writing, based on the published pattern from recent years, expect interview calls to run through the winter following each deadline. Confirm the current interview timeline directly on XLRI's official PGDM-GM admissions page before finalizing your own prep calendar.
