IIM Lucknow IPMX: The Complete Application Guide (Eligibility, Fees, GMAT, Interview)

IIM Lucknow's International Programme in Management for Executives doesn't get the same search volume as ISB PGP or IIM Ahmedabad's PGPX, but for a specific kind of applicant it's arguably the more sensible choice. It's a one-year, IIM-branded MBA at a fraction of the profile scrutiny and a noticeably lower fee than several rival programs. If you're reading this close to the end of August 2026, the immediate question isn't whether IPMX fits your background. It's whether you can put together a complete application before Phase 1 closes on September 2, 2026, or whether you're better off building a stronger file for Phase 2.
This guide covers who IPMX is actually built for, exactly how IIM Lucknow weighs your GMAT Focus Edition or GRE score against your WAT and interview performance, what the program costs across four installments, and how it stacks up against the other one-year options worth considering.
Who IPMX Is Actually Built For
The eligibility bar is narrower than it looks on paper. You need a bachelor's degree with at least 50% marks or an equivalent CGPA, in any discipline, plus a minimum of four years of full-time work experience after graduation, counted as of March 31, 2027. There's no upper age limit, and the program is open to candidates of any nationality, though the batch skews heavily toward Indian professionals working across private, public sector, government and NGO roles.
The four-year floor is the detail that trips people up most. IPMX isn't chasing the 24 to 26-year-old cohort that ISB PGP or IIM Ahmedabad's PGPX often pull in on the younger end. IIM Lucknow's own class profile for the current IPMX-19 batch runs to roughly 110 seats of mid-to-senior professionals, and the interview panel is explicitly evaluating whether you've held enough responsibility to contribute in a classroom of peers, not just whether you cleared a cutoff. If your total experience is closer to three years than five, you'll want to make that case very deliberately in your profile essays rather than assume the number alone gets you through. For a sense of how a younger-skewing program handles this differently, our ISB PGP application guide breaks down where that program sets its own experience expectations.
The 2027-28 Calendar: Three Phases, One Trap
IIM Lucknow runs IPMX admissions in three phases rather than the four or five rounds some other programs use, and the dates for the 2027-28 batch (classes starting April 2027) are already published.
If you're reading this before September 2, 2026, Phase 1 is still open, and it's the only phase where a rejection doesn't immediately end your cycle. IIM Lucknow's own admissions page states plainly that candidates rejected after the personal interview in an earlier phase cannot reapply in a subsequent phase for the same batch. That single rule changes the calculus: if your profile, GMAT Focus Edition or GRE score, and application materials are genuinely ready now, applying in Phase 1 gives you the longest runway to a WAT-PI slot in November. If they're not ready, a rushed Phase 1 submission that ends in rejection can close the door on Phase 2 and Phase 3 entirely, so it can be the more conservative move to wait and apply once, properly, in Phase 2.
Phase | Opens | Deadline | WAT / PI Window | Results |
Phase 1 | July 20, 2026 | September 2, 2026 | Nov 14-22, 2026 | December 15, 2026 |
Phase 2 | September 3, 2026 | October 17, 2026 | Dec 12-20, 2026 | January 15, 2027 |
Phase 3 | October 18, 2026 | December 1, 2026 | Jan 16-24, 2027 | February 15, 2027 |
What Actually Gets You In: The Selection Weights
IIM Lucknow publishes its selection formula rather than leaving it to guesswork, and it's more balanced than a pure test-score program. GMAT Focus Edition or GRE score accounts for 30% of the decision, your academic and professional profile another 30%, the Written Ability Test 10%, and the personal interview the remaining 30%.
Only test center-based GMAT Focus Edition and GRE scores are accepted; the at-home or online versions of either exam are explicitly not valid for IPMX. That's worth flagging early because it's an easy detail to miss if you've already scheduled an online sitting for a different application. There's no published minimum score cutoff, since the review is holistic, but a strong profile paired with a middling test score, or the reverse, will each only get you partway. If you're still deciding between the two exams, including how the GMAT Focus Edition's 205 to 805 scale compares to the old 200 to 800 GMAT that was retired in February 2024, we've laid out the actual trade-offs in our GMAT versus GRE breakdown.

The Real Cost: INR 26 Lakh, Four Installments
The total program fee for the 2027-28 batch is INR 26,00,000, plus a refundable caution deposit of INR 20,000 and a one-time alumni fee of INR 5,000. It's split across four installments rather than collected upfront: roughly INR 3,00,000 due in January 2027, then three installments of about INR 5,75,000 each due in March, May, and between September and December 2027, timed loosely against the program's term structure.
That staggered schedule matters for anyone financing the program through an employer sponsorship or an education loan, since the last installment lands well into the second half of the course rather than at admission. The application fee itself is INR 5,000, non-refundable, on top of the program fee. As with any published fee schedule, confirm the exact figures on IIM Lucknow's own admissions page before you commit. These numbers can shift between application cycles.
The WAT and Interview: Where Most Candidates Underprepare
It's easy to fixate on the GMAT Focus Edition score since it's the most quantifiable input, but the Written Ability Test and personal interview together carry 40% of the decision, ten points more than the test score alone. Candidates who've already cleared a strong GMAT number sometimes walk into the WAT-PI stage treating it as a formality, and that's the single most common way a strong file underperforms at IPMX.
The WAT specifically rewards structured, decisive writing on ambiguous prompts under real time pressure, not polished prose. We've broken down the actual topic patterns IIM Lucknow draws from and how to structure a response that holds up in our IPMX WAT preparation guide. If you want to run timed practice against the real IPMX format before your WAT-PI window opens, Launchpad's free WAT Practice Test covers ISB PGP, IIM Bangalore EPGP and IIM Lucknow IPMX formats across 144 topics, with no sign-up required.
How IPMX Stacks Up Against the Other One-Year Options
IPMX sits in an unusual spot among India's one-year MBA programs. It carries the full triple-crown accreditation of AACSB, AMBA and EQUIS, includes a three-week international immersion inside its 12-month structure, and runs out of the Noida campus rather than the main Lucknow campus, which matters if you're weighing commute or relocation during the program.
Against ISB PGP and IIM Ahmedabad's PGPX, IPMX is generally the less competitive admit on paper, but it's also less differentiated in the placement conversations recruiters have about it, since it has a smaller alumni base and a shorter public track record than either of those two programs. Against IIM Bangalore's EPGP and IIM Calcutta's MBAEx, the comparison is closer: similar fee bands, similar work experience expectations, and the real difference often comes down to campus location, cohort size and which sector's recruiters show up most consistently at each school's placement process. We've mapped all four IIM one-year programs side by side, including where each one's admissions calendar and fee structure diverge, in our complete one-year MBA playbook.
Should You Rush Phase 1, or Wait for Phase 2?
If your GMAT Focus Edition or GRE score is already in hand, your work experience clears four years by March 2027, and your essays and recommendations can genuinely be ready in the next two days, apply in Phase 1. The math favors it: more time before the WAT-PI window, more time to prepare deliberately for that 40% of the decision, and a decision back well before other programs' later rounds close.
If any one of those three isn't true yet, Phase 2's October 17 deadline is the better target, not a consolation prize. A complete, well-prepared Phase 2 application beats a rushed Phase 1 submission every time, and given that a post-interview rejection in an earlier phase locks you out of later ones, there's real downside to submitting before you're ready just to hit an earlier date on the calendar.
